Ethernet Cabling Standard Cat5

Usually called as Cat5,  Category five cable is set of four twisted pair copper wire  that are insulated by  outer jacket. Such twenty-four gauge copper wires terminate at RJ-45 jack. These cables were unshielded but shielded were available too. It has been designed for higher signal integrity & used for cabling computer networks as Ethernet. That's why it was sometimes referred as Ethernet cable. It may also be applied for other signals such as ATM, Token rings as well as basic voice services. Now for all types of network and phone wiring, this cable is a preferred industry standards defined by TIA / EIA - Electronic Industries Association as well as Telecommunications Industry Association.

Outer covers of Cat5 cables comes at different colors. Most general being blue. There’s a standard color technique for plastic which protects twisted pairs inside. Blue, Orange, brown and green wires were twisted except termination point where connections are given. This twisting preserves higher signal-noise ratio by dropping crosstalk and interference. It may handle frequencies up to hundred Megahertz .You may purchase this cable of different lengths which you desire. Standard length along with attached RJ-45 jacks is available.

Wire pairs have 2 major variants. They have stranded or solid core. Standard cables were suitable for shorter distances. For instance, patch cables have to connect the computer network cards to network jack terminus stranded core has been used. Solid cables may work with longest distances. For the runs from wall terminations back to network patch panels, solid cores are being used.

Variant of Cat5 cables was Plenum Cat5 that has special outer cover which doesn't produce toxic fumes when it burns. These were used for making fire codes of certain buildings.

Earlier Cat3 cables supported the data speeds of ten megabits for second. Whereas Cat5 cable carries data speeds up to hundred mbps. Enhanced version of the Cat5 is a Cat5e specification which supports information speeds of thousand mbps (GB Ethernet). Despite of performance it is recommended for shortest distances that run for maximum of hundred meters. So it might not be suit for the longer distances of Ethernet networks. Cat5 is backward compatible along with standard Cat5 cables.

Most recent cable technology was Cat6 cable which has most stringent specifications for the crosstalk and system noise. It has been expected to support ten gigabit Ethernet standards, along some limitations in length.

Cat5 cables are necessary element when you have to enjoy unrestricted telephone access through computer, or accounts (as your bank accounts or credit card) without external interferences. Cat5 cables that are called as cat5 cable allows you to enjoy comfort of accessing your own accounts without having the time to see your bank, Phone Company, or net provider due to hardware malfunctions.

The Cat5 cables could also be used outdoors as well as indoors. It is always healthier to have cable systems with high class Cat5 cables in order to ensure that the data get transferred in course of time daily.
